Sweden Hills: The Japanese Village That Looks Like a Swedish Town

In Japan, located on the island of Hokkaido near the town Tobetsu, there's a village called Sweden Hills that doesn't remind you of a typical and traditional Japanese community. Instead, it shares similarities with a Swedish town called Leksand in the northern part of Sweden.

Tucked up in the hills about 30 km (19 miles) away from Sapporo City, Japan, there is a small village called Sweden Hills. Stepping foot into this distinct Swedish-style town located in Tōbetsu, on Hokkaido Island, one is transported out of Japan and straight into another country. The town specializes in all things Swedish: from folk crafts and traditional Swedish holidays to the characteristic red and white European architecture, it is enough to draw Swedish tourists from far and wide to a little chunk of their homeland.

Despite being nearly 8,000 km (5,000 miles) away from Sweden, this little town in Japan has adopted many of the nation's customs, earning itself a sister city. (A sister city or twin town is a legal agreement struck between countries to promote cultural and commercial ties.) The town’s sister city is named Leksand in Dalarna County, Sweden which may have something to do with the related atmosphere that can be found in Sweden Hills.

This budding relationship between the two towns and nations actually began over 30 years ago. Planning for Sweden Hills started in 1979, when a Swedish Ambassador visited the area and was struck by how similar it was to his home country. Construction on the city commenced in 1984 and, as of 2005, there were 550 residents reported to have called this quirky little village their home.

The Growing Popularity of Yoga on Cuba

Eduardo Pimentel, yoga teacher and the president and founder of the Cuban Yoga Association (CYA), has been instrumental in spreading the teachings of yoga in Havana. Despite difficult working conditions, the practice flourish, and since the improved relations in 2015 between U.S. and Cuba, Pimentel's expertise will now benefit yogis outside Cuba as well.

Eduardo de Jesus Pimentel Vázquez—more commonly known as Eduardo Pimentel, the "Godfather of Cuban yoga"—has taught over 20,000 practitioners in Havana alone. He teaches daily in various locations, such as a rented veranda of a governmental institution, inside of a theater, at a local martial arts center, or at his own apartment with a maximum capacity of 12 students.

The conditions are minimalist—students rest in Savasana on a small area of tiled floor space, surrounded by empty walls with peeling paint and views of lush, fertile jungle outside. Pimentel dreams of one day selling his apartment for a larger space, so that he can open a yoga studio of his own—which as of today, would be the first of its kind.

[…]

Known throughout Cuba as "green medicine," yoga and other forms of holistic healing were backed by the government to promote good health among citizens. Yoga was often broadcast on governmental television networks, featuring Pimentel in many of the segments.

A Photo Essay: The Manufacturing of Bidi Cigarettes in India

In India, more than four million workers manufacture bidi cigarettes, also known as a poor man's smoke. These cigarettes are wrapped in tendu leaf and are sometimes flavoured with chocolate, vanilla and cinnamon to name a few.

Bloomberg Business visited some of the homes and small workshops where bidi-making took place for their photo essay "Bidis: The Hand-Rolled Cigarettes That Keep More Than Four Million Indians Employed".

Rare Color Footage of Everyday Scenes from London in 1926

From the British Film Institute's archive, footage of everyday scenes from London in 1926, shot in color by cinematographer Claude Friese-Greene.

While Gatsby fever grips the film world in anticipation of the release of Baz Luhrmann’s new F. Scott Fitzgerald adaptation, the internet has been abuzz with an authentic vision of life in the 1920s. Colour footage of London in 1926, filmed by pioneer filmmaker Claude Friese-Greene for his cross-country travelogue The Open Road, has captured the imagination of online viewers, with an extract from the BFI’s restoration going viral following a tweet from actor Kevin Spacey.

The YouTube uploader says it so eloquently: "It's like a beautifully dusty old postcard you'd find in a junk store, but moving."

In an ambitious project, Simon Smith re-created Claude Friese-Greene's shots, enabling for an interesting comparison that shows how little the architecture of London has changed over the years.

Past Present Project: Photographer Relives His Grandparents Travels in the 70's and 80's

With the photo project Past Present Project, photographer Christian Carollo honors and relives his grandparents travel experiences from the late 70's and early 80's. This project inspires me to both get back to photography, and journal writing, but also to start travelling more.

The Past Present Project began as a way to showcase my grandfather’s vintage photography from around the United States, but the project that resulted happened purely by chance. It all started in October 2012 with a randomly selected box of slides that contained his photographs of the Oregon Coast, which is exactly where I would be traveling a week later. Most of the images were scenic shots, but one shot displayed a building in the small coastal town of Winchester Bay. I wondered, what if I could replicate my grandfather’s photograph 30 years later? I did just that and my new mission was born.

Upon returning home, and seeing the interest that built around that single photograph, I wondered how many more I could possibly capture. With the help of my grandmother’s detailed travel journals from their cross-country trips, I have managed to discover the location of dozens of my grandfather’s images. A project that began by chance, now often determines where my next journey will take me.

Since I largely have my grandfather to thank for my love of travel and photography, I wanted to honor his memory by replicating the photographs he took from his trips all across America. This is my Past Present to him!
