Avolatte: Coffee in a Piece of 'Rubbish'

Avolatte is a latte made in an avocado, something that Truman Cafe in Melbourne came up with as a joke when they uploaded it on Instagram. But when the video went viral, it went from being a joke to something real. Hilarious!

From news.com.au:

This is either a clever marketing campaign wrapped up as a tongue-in-cheek satire about the housing affordability debate, or maybe we've just reached peak hipster. Or maybe both.

But judging from the cry-laugh emoji posted alongside a video of the caffeinated creation posted on Instagram last week which has since gone viral, it’s probably all just a dumb joke.

In fact a barista at the cafe, Jaydin Nathan, confirmed the obvious to news.com.au that, yes, "it was actually just a joke".

"We weren't actually selling them but then someone came in today and wanted one," he said.

"I think it's ridiculous. It's literally coffee in a piece of rubbish."

Juicero: The Obsolete Cold-press Juicer

Casey Neistat recently talked about his friend's start-up called Juicero, a company that sells an at-home cold-press juicer. In Neistat's vlog (YouTube link), he demonstrates some of the product's lack of needs - you can do this all by yourself without using a machine.

I prefer to use a hand juice squeezer myself or a mixer, mostly beacause it saves the environment.

The following reviewer certainly didn't help either with increasing the sales:

Mini-restaurant for Mice in Malmo, Sweden

In the city of Malmo, Sweden, there is a charming mini-restaurant for mice.

Huffington Post reports:

If you take a look down you may notice something amazing inside a basement window in the neighborhood of Möllevången. Tiny businesses — a bakery and a "cheese and cracker" shop — just the right size for mice.

"It's just too darn charming to imagine a world where mice lives parallel to ours but just slightly out of sight," said one representative of the artist group Anonymouse MMX, who wishes to remain anonymous. (The group has no connection with Anonymouse.org, a site devoted to online privacy.)

They cited the works of Don Bluth, Disney and Astrid Lindgren as "big influences" for the idea. The photos appear to show only two adjacent shops, but the group says they have plans for more.

What to Eat and What Not to Eat When Traveling: Anthony Bourdain Gives Advice

Belle Cushing from Bon Appétit sat down with TV host, author and chef Anthony Bourdain as he gave advice about how to think about food when traveling, something that Bourdain has lots of knowledge about with over 200 travel days per year.

Do you eat the plane food?
Never. No one has ever felt better after eating plane food. I think people only eat it because they're bored. I don’t eat on planes. I like to arrive hungry.

What if you’re on a super-long flight?
You just don’t eat?For a super-long flight, I'd order cheese and shit load of port. I'd eat some cheese and drink myself stupid.

Where should I travel now?
Beirut. The food's delicious, the people are awesome. It's a party town. And everything wrong with the world is there. Hopefully, you will come back smarter about the world. You’ll understand a little more about how uninformed people are when they talk about that part of the world. You’ll come back as I did: changed and cautiously hopeful and confused in the best possible way. Travel at its best defies expectations. Yes, it's divided. There are Shia neighborhoods, Christian areas—but they all go to the same restaurants. You can go from bikinis by the pool to Hezbollah in an 8-minute cab ride. They all coexist in a weird way. That's part of the thing that makes Beirut so interesting.

It's All About Balance: Model David Gandy's Relaxed Attitude to Stay in Shape

Male model David Gandy has a healthy attitude towards food and exercise. Whenever I read or watch an interview with him, he seems balanced whether it's about food, exercise or life in general.

The Gentlemans Journal met up with Gandy to ask him some questions about how he stays in shape.

On Diets:

"The right amount of water, the right foods – not crappy, fatty processed foods. It's everything in moderation, you can eat too much fish or too much meat. I actually had mercury poisoning from tuna because it topped off the levels in my body and made me quite ill."

"People say to me, 'my God, you must not eat something', and then, 'good God, you're eating cake'. I probably eat more than most people think I might, but I'm actually a foodie and I eat a lot. I just stay away from processed foods – white pastas, white carbohydrates, high sugar content, saturated fat – but I can still eat so much because of that. People [unnecessarily] go to the extremities of something."

Starbucks' Hot Mulled Fruit Contains 25 Teaspoons of Sugar Per Serving

Action on Sugar is a charity that consists of a group of specialists that research sugar's effects on health. They have just released some rather shocking data, which reveals that many hot flavoured drinks from well-known companies such as Starbucks, Costa Coffee and KFC contain large amounts of added sugar. For example, one of Starbucks' Hot Mulled Fruits contained 25 teaspoons of sugar per serving compared to a can of (unhealthy) Coke with only 9 teaspoons per can.

With an estimated 1.7 billion cups of coffee sold each year in the UK from over 18,000 outlets and one in five of the population (including teenagers) visiting a coffee shop daily, campaign group Action on Sugar is today warning of the dangerously high sugar content of certain hot beverages found in many high street coffee shop chains.

This new research by Action on Sugar shows that 98% of the 131 hot flavoured drinks analysed would receive a 'red' (high) label for excessive levels of sugars per serving as sold.

What's more, 35% of the hot flavoured drinks contain the same amount or more sugars than Coca Cola, which contains a massive 9 teaspoons of sugar per can – equivalent to 7 chocolate biscuits.

The worst offender is the Starbuck's Hot Mulled Fruit - Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon Venti (extra-large) – a mix of chai and fruit concentrate, topped with a cinnamon stick and a slice of orange – which contains 25 teaspoons of sugar (that's the equivalent of sugar in 5 muffins), followed by Costa Coffee's Chai Latte (large) with a massive 20 teaspoons of sugar. Interestingly, a Starbuck's Hot Mulled Fruit - Grape with Chai, Orange and Cinnamon Tall (medium) has almost half the amount of sugar than the larger sized cup (13 vs 25 tsp).

'A Film About Coffee" (2014)': In Search of the Ultimate Cup

Director Brandon Loper's documentary "A Film About Coffee" (2014) captures the coffee bean's (seed) journey from seed to cup.

A Film About Coffee follows the production of coffee from farms in Honduras and harvests in Rwanda to its global consumption. Listening to farmers, buyers, roasters and baristas about the crop's economic and environmental implications both locally and abroad, the narrative travels to coffee shops in Tokyo, Portland, Seattle, San Francisco and New York, with stops in between. Dropping in on artisanal cafes to investigate how each prepares its own unique cup, the film opens a window into the little-understood world of specialty coffee.

Death Wish Coffee: The World’s Strongest Coffee That Got Even 'Stronger' After Super Bowl

Death Wish Coffee won the competition for small business owners who wanted to advertise during this year's Super Bowl. Forbes' Susan Adams, met up with founder and owner Mike Brown to talk with him about how he came to join this business in the first place, the comapany's growth, lessons learned along the way and how's business after the Super Bowl.

Adams: Before the Super Bowl commercial, how did you market the brand?

Brown: We've tried to do as much free marketing as possible. We've sent the product to news reporters, celebrities, bloggers. Ninety-nine percent of the time I don't hear anything back. But when people wrote reviews about it, we'd see a bump in sales. We also do Facebook ads and Google advertising. Facebook ads work better than Google ads. We get charged about a dollar every time someone clicks on our ad.
